Chesapeake is one of the best-run cities in the Commonwealth of Virginia — and that did not happen by accident. Our AAA bond rating, our $2.6 billion in net assets, and our long tradition of responsible governance are the result of leaders who understood that a city's strength begins with sound finances and a commitment to the taxpayer. That foundation is something to be proud of, and it is something worth protecting as we chart the course for the next generation of growth. But protecting what we have built does not mean standing still. Chesapeake is projected to add nearly 50,000 new residents and more than 52,000 new jobs by 2045. That growth is coming whether we plan for it or not. The conservative approach — the smart approach — is to get ahead of it. That means directing new development into corridors and areas already served by existing roads, water, and sewer infrastructure, so that growth pays for itself rather than passing the bill to the families and businesses already here. It means demanding that new development generate strong tax revenue, create good jobs, and strengthen our communities — not strain them. Responsible growth is not a liberal idea or a conservative idea. It is simply good stewardship.
